Baldhip Rose

This is a weird rose. It’s happy in shade, and never gets larger than about five feet tall. So it’s sometimes known as a Dwarf Rose or a Little Wood Rose. On our sunny site, it’s sure to stay pretty compact. It’s not as showy as some roses, but this northwest native is well-loved because of its delicate grace.
The Baldhip gets its name from the fact that the flower’s outer green leafy structures, known as the sepal, fall away from the the hip, the fruity bloom. So it’s a naked rose. You may also notice that this rose is only mildly prickly, so it’s a friendly little thing. We don’t really get deer on the median, but you may see birds like juncos and thrushes feeding on the rose hips.
